Prehistoric wood meets AI.
In 2021, the archaeology service (Archäologischer Dienst) of the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, charged docusave with resealing and indexing 28,251 cross-sectional slices of tree trunks, known as “dendros”.
The items had to be resealed, as several seams in the encasing material had become defective over time and it was no longer certain that the objects were protected from coming into contact with oxygen. To avoid errors when treating the objects, docusave designed a global concept in which the unique identification of each individual object and its digital assignment to the right Rako box and pallet was of particular importance. To index the objects, we used an AI scanner (OCR deep learning) that was integrated into docusave’s in-house logistics system. With the additional control indexing system, all objects were scanned, recorded and compared with the data furnished by the archaeological service.
